Queen Mary Cruise Ship - A History in Excellence

The Queen Mary cruise ship was the flagship ocean liner for prominent ship owners Cunard from 1936 through to her retirement in 1967. She was replaced by the Queen Mary 2.

This ship was designed to be one of the ships to perform the twice-weekly express service for Cunard, sailing from Southampton to New York via Cherbourg, France. However, the Queen Mary was forced to serve as a troop transport ship during the Second World War and the service did not begin until the end of the war. This cruise ship did, however, undertake this route for twenty years alongside sister ship the Queen Elizabeth.

Following her retirement in 1967, she is now berthed in Long Beach, California, where she is used as a museum ship and hotel. The retired luxury cruise ship is now a popular destination for ghost hunters, as she is said to be the most haunted ocean liner in the world.

The name Mary is taken from Mary of Teck, the Queen Consort of King George V. However, the process was not a simple one. The ship was originally due to be named the "Victoria", due to a long Cunard tradition of naming ships with names that end in "ia". However, company representatives at the time asked King George V for permission to name the liner after the country's "greatest Queen". George V misunderstood this, and said he would be delighted to have the liner named after his own wife Mary - not the longest reigning British sovereign, Queen Victoria, as Cunard had meant! The story is something of a legend and is probably not true, but it is an interesting tale. The real reason for the Cunard policy of "ia" names is more likely to be due to it's merger with the White Star Line, who had a company policy of naming ships which "ic" ending names (such as the doomed Titanic and her sister ships the Olympic and Britannic), so a new naming system was designed for the new company.

This story is one of many in a difficult history for this criuse ship. After the naming ceremony, the Queen Mary was making her way down the slipway, but built up too much speed and almost overshot her stopping point in the Clyde, racing onward toward the opposite bank. Thankfully, disaster was averted by the drag chains, and the ship was able to take to the seas for her maiden voyage on May 27th 1936.

For her time, this cruise ship had a sumptuous interior and entertainments. The ship boasted an indoor swimming pool, salon, ship's library, children's nursery, ship's kennel and an outdoor paddle tennis court. The largest and most luxurious interior space was the Grand Salon - the dining room - which was two stories high, as was the indoor swimming pool.

During her 30 plus years aboard the waves, the cruise ship gained a fantastic reputation for elegance and speed. Her successor, the Queen Mary 2, carried on the tradition and fine reputation of the name and is now arguably the most sought-after ocean liner in the world.

To all the meanies who commented on my last video about the poor camera work, I am sorry. But I tried to get this uploaded asap so you could see it almost immediately. Next time a boat sinks I will take more care to be still. I added music again so that the video doesnt seem too boring because it is a little long. The ship started to list in fira after hitting some volcanic reef in the old port. But Shadow wouldn't cooperate. He had an emotional discussion with Sonic and decided to do a solo mission els where. Then the four heroes went to the doom ship. They use a special plane to get to it but it wasn't easy. Bowser's minions attacked the plane from afar. But Mario and his friends successfully entered the doom ship. They battled through many enemies. It was hard and Sonic accidentally put fire to boxes of Bob-ombs and Sonic was hit by the explosion. But as the last resort he had, he used the fire flower they got from professor Egadd and transformed into Sonic the Firehog. The battle went great, until the captain got in. Captain Basilisx turned Luigi, Sonic and Yoshi into stones and fought Mario in a one on one fight. But Mario had to bid the dust and lost. Episode end. This process will make though as if the individually wrapped ceramic mug is 'floating' in the box rather than direct contact. You can use more paper if you feel the ceramic-based mugs are still not well insulated. When the mugs are packed neatly into a box, they will be able to withstand rough handling, as they are protected by the bubble wrap, cardboard and paper.

In fact, you could do a test and kick one mug to test for breakage possibilities. If you ceramic mug comes out intact, then you are in business.

Ceramic mugs make such wonderful gifts, and if the receiver gets one and it is broken, chances of fixing them is possible, but it would not be the same. So do whatever is necessary to protect your mugs from getting destroyed during the shipping process.

She decided to conduct an experiment in cruise bargain hunting by calling three travel agents and, after relaying the specifics of her desired voyage, advised each agent that whoever gave her the best price would get her business. She saved thousands of dollars.

The travel agent who won her business did it by rebating. If there is one dirty word in the cruise industry it's rebating, which means an agent kicks back part of his or her commission (generally 15% of the cruise fare) to pass along a lower fare.

After 15 years of writing about the cruise industry I still don't see why rebating is bad - don't real estate agents and car salesmen do the same thing? Isn't this just basic competition? Still, several cruise lines won't let any travel agent rebate cruise fares, including Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Crystal Cruises, Regent Seven Sea Cruises and, to a large part, Norwegian Cruise Line.

Of course your chances are better in some cruising regions. Right now, sales of Caribbean, Mexico, Baltic, South America and Western Europe cruises are soft. Hence, here you stand a better chance of getting a lower price than on Alaska and Greek Island cruises, which are selling much better this year.

It's all about supply and demand. And timing. For example, traditionally suites and balcony cabins sell out first. But now that a bad economy is upon us and there's overcapacity in the Caribbean, Mexico and some areas of Europe, you still may get a better deal on the highest-priced categories. So ask. The only think a travel agent can say is "sorry, this is the price."

WHEN NOT TO SHOP AROUND: When you have a wonderful travel agent you trust implicitly, who has steered you towards good deals in the past. To save $100 or so isn't worth it.

One caveat. Travel agents can only rebate the price of a cruise. There are fixed costs, like port charges, taxes, fuel surcharges and airfare that are never negotiable.
